Information center in the water area of the Upper Iset Pond in Yekaterinburg

The information center is located in the Verkh-Isetsky district of the city of Yekaterinburg, on the bank of the Iset river along the Tatishchev, Lotsmanovy, Tankist, Klyuchevskaya, on a plot of 4.2 hectares. The information center includes a library: a scientific, public, children’s library, an archive, a media library, and the Tatlin Publishing Center. Total building area 0,9 hectares.
The given project assumes the decision of a problem of infrastructural security of both Verkh-Isetsky area, and city as a whole. This is due to the shortage of educational and leisure institutions of a new generation. The creation of a modern, conceptual and aesthetically attractive multifunctional complex presupposes an increase in the population’s interest in educational activities as a form of leisure activities, as well as enhancement of the cultural status of the city. On the perimeter, the functional volume, in the form of an inverted ziggurat, is enclosed in a shell of a cubic form, pierced with arches from all facades. Thanks to this, the building has a simple but tectonic structure. The structural system of the building is the frame system near the outer shell, the wall monolithic system in the inner volume. The covering and overlapping of the center are monolithic. The structures of the main volume are made of reinforced concrete, the outer shell design is steel. The facade is made mainly of double glazing.
This project is inspired at the same time by ancient ziggurats and the legend of the Tower of Babel (it is not without reason that a number of scholar-biblical scholars trace the connection of this legend with the construction in the Mesopotamia of the towers-temples). But this is not just a copy of ancient buildings – it is rather an anti-ziggurat, because the floor area does not decrease from bottom to top, but, on the contrary, it increases. The modern ziggurat is not the dwelling place of God. It is a building that meets the needs of our time: it is not intended to bring us closer to the Creator or to elevate us to the same level, but is aimed at giving us the opportunity to touch knowledge, to discover what was behind the creation of man as a thinking being; In the end, modern methods of cognition differ significantly from those practiced for several millennia before our era. On the other hand, the connection with the past remains obvious, because the desire for knowledge is one of the basic aspirations of mankind.
Everything in this project speaks about the path of knowledge, including the gallery space, which encircles the building along its entire length. Space is also endowed with valuable functionality: here, visitors to the center can work with selected literature in the fresh air in a comfortable environment. The roof of the building is a platform with various architectural elements, as well as with cypresses, rooted in the columns. Thus, the entire building is literally permeated with elements that reflect the essence of knowledge and accentuate its significance for man. This is undoubtedly relevant for this complex information center also because it attracts every visitor to this path. The inner part of the building remains here a core, a concentration of knowledge that can satisfy the needs and desires of everyone who seeks to overcome their ignorance and become closer to the truth.
