In 1961, Jane Jacobs, a Canadian-American writer, one of the founders of the New Urbanism movement, published her book The Death and Life of Great American Cities. In her book, Jacobs criticized urban policy, which destroys many inner-city spaces. The consequence of this book was the term «Urban Sprawl», which formed the basis for understanding the urban environment. In 1973, mathematicians George Danzig and Thomas Saati relying on the «Urban Sprawl» formulated the concept of «Compact City», which is the primary basis for the formation of future «Smart Cities». It is obvious that the city of Yekaterinburg, like any other major city in Russia, is subject to «sprawl» and, as a result, less efficient use of urban space. Hence the modern tendency to increase the density of buildings, and, consequently, to increase the intensity of its use. One of the methods to increase the density of the urban environment can be the use of so-called «urban voids» such as spaces over passage to a residential, public or commercial zone. The project of a low-rise residential building «Pulse» is an example of the transformation of space over the passage to a residential area with a public function. The project is located in the city of Yekaterinburg on Rosa Luxemburg street. On the site there is an insignificant relief difference with the predominant increase in the direction from north to south; The territory has several buildings intended for reconstruction. The planned design object is located in an urbanized environment. The project is a four-story volume, the functions of which can vary. So, such «filling the volume» can serve as a fully public building, apartment building, residential area for 3 apartments with public function on the 1st floor and a three-level apartment with a public function on the 1st floor. The last option was chosen as an approbation of the idea. Despite the fact that the project «Pulse» is not located in the industrial zone, the interior solution is made in the Loft style. The main materials of the interior space are black metal, wood and concrete. Depending on the function of the interior space (living room, bedroom, etc.), one material can prevail over another. So, in the bedroom area, for maximum comfort, a tree is used, and in the living room or study, metal prevails. An important aspect of the design solution of the object «Pulse» is a metamorphosis, which manifests itself through the shape of the object and the color solution of the facade. It’s no secret that the city is a «living organism». For this reason, the periodic presence in the urban environment of an atypical, invoking and eye-catching object is necessary to provide a pulse to a living organism called a city.
