Maciej Franta

Maciej Franta — Polish architect, born in 1983 in Chorzów. Awarded the title of the Architect of the Year 2021 in the competition organized by The Architecture Community in 2022 and included in the list of 40 most promising young architects in the world in the plebiscite 40 under 40 2021 organized by The European Center.

Author of, inter alia, Villa Reden, one of the most awarded architectural projects in 2021. The building has won such awards as: Eurasian Prize 2021, DNA Paris Design Awards 2021, World Design Awards 2021, Architecture Masterprize 2021, Iconic Awards 2021, European Property Awards 2021, Urban Design & Architecture Design Awards 2022 and more.

Maciej Franta graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the Krakow University of Technology in 2008, and then also doctoral studies there. He also studied at the Faculty of Architecture at Knoxville University in Tennessee. In 2007, he completed an internship at the Gensler architectural studio in New York. Since 2010, he has been running the Franta Architects Group studio in Katowice, which brings together 24 architects and deals with the design of architecture and urban planning of housing estates, public and service buildings. The studio’s projects have been awarded many times in competitions in Poland and around the world. Apart from architecture, Maciej Franta is also interested in logic, travel and future.

Andrey Bokov 2022

Andrey Bokov Doctor of Architecture, Vice-president of International Academy of architecture (IAA), president of the Eurasian branch of IAA (MAAM), Member of the European Society of Culture.

Academician Andrey Bokov is the author of more than a hundred city-planning and architectural projects. Architectural design includes more than 100 realized projects, among main realized projects are: experimental residential area in Nizhny Novgorod; the Pavilion No. 4 at All-Russian Exhibition Centre; V.V. Mayakovsky Museum on Lubyanka Square; A. Pushkin Museum in Prechistenka St.; office buildings at Savinskaya Embankment, Gilyarovsky St. and Bolshoi Gnezdnikovsky L.; “Locomotive” football stadium, covered skating centre in Krylatskoye, “Megasport” Ice Palace; oval apartment blocks on Khodynka area; K. Stanislavsky and V. Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Academic Theatre, etc.

Andrey Bokov published two books and over 50 articles in national and foreign issues. Many of them were awarded Union of Architects’ prizes. He conducted theoretical research of urban and environmental design and development of social infrastructure. He is one of the creators of the “environmental approach in architecture”. For many years worked as a consultant and workshop leader in the Senezh Design Studio, a professional and academic center for environmental and urban design. He was a teacher in Moscow Architectural Institute, in State University on Land Development, in Sourikov Moscow Artistic High School. As a regular participant in international professional competitions has been awarded over 40 times.

Beatrice Galilee

Beatrice Galilee is a London-born curator, writer and cultural advisor who is internationally recognized for her expertise in global contemporary architecture and design. She is the author of Radical Architecture of the Future, published by Phaidon in 2021, and between 2014-2019 served as the first curator of contemporary architecture and design at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Currently living in New York, Ms Galilee is co-founder and executive director of The World Around, a new platform for contemporary design and architecture that is in residence at the Guggenheim Museum. Beatrice is a visiting associate professor at Pratt Institute where she lectures on curating.

Beatrice served as chief curator of the 2013 Lisbon Architecture Triennale; co-curator of 2011 Gwangju Design Biennale, co-curator of 2009 Shenzhen Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism. Between 2010-2012 she launched and co-directed The Gopher Hole, an experimental exhibition and project space in London.

Between 2006-2009 she served the award-winning architecture editor of Icon Magazine, one of Europe’s leading publications in architecture and design, and is a respected critic: her reviews, profiles and features on contemporary design have been published in a number of international magazines and books as well as daily newspapers, including e-Flux, CNN Style, Vogue Italia, Art Review, Domus, Abitare, MARK, Tank, Pin-Up, Above, Building Design, Architectural Review, Architecture Today, RIBA Journal, Architect’s Journal, DAMn, Frame, Wallpaper, Another Magazine. the Serpentine Pavilion catalogue.

Gilda Bojardi

Gilda Bojardi is editor since 1994 of the magazine Interni published by Gruppo Mondadori, and also Editor of all the publications of the Interni system: the Annuals (Cucina, Bagno, Contract); Interni Panorama, the supplement to Panorama, the weekly news magazine; the Design Index; the FuoriSalone Guide, the Mexico City/Milano guide and the Apps of the FuoriSalone and Zee Milano; KingSize, the preview of new products at the Salone del Mobile.

She invented the FuoriSalone, a project that began on an experimental basis in 1990, and has become the Design Week that fills the city of Milan every year, in the month of April, with over 450 events. Every year in April from 1998 to the present, she organizes an exhibition-event during Design Week in Milan on one of the major themes of the international design debate, inviting the most important international architects and designers to address the subject through the creation of micro-architecture.

As a curator, Gilda Bojardi creates and organizes cultural events and exhibitions in many different countries (Beijing: 2006 at NAMOC; 2011 at National Museum of China, partner Ministry of Culture). Among the honors she received: in 2005 Officier des Arts et des Lettres, by the French Ministry of Culture; in 2007 the Ambrogino d’Oro award from the City of Milan for the creation of the FuoriSalone, in 2014 the ITA Italian Talent Award by the Chamber of Deputies in Rome. She has been the Italian Ambassador of Design for Italian Design Day in March 2017 in Mexico City, and in March 2018 and 2019 in Madrid. In 2019 she received Medalla Anáhuac en Diseño, Mexico City. In September 2020 she received the Compasso d’Oro ADI award for the career. In July 2022 the TAO Award for Design.

Job Smeets

Studio Job is a ground-breaking art and design studio based in the Netherlands and Milan and is an international leader in contemporary art and sculpture. Led by Job Smeets (b.1969) a pioneer of modern conceptual and sculptural art and design, he founded Studio Job in 1998 producing once-in-a-lifetime objects. Smeets leads a team of highly talented craftspeople to produce art pieces, projects and works in the atelier in the Netherlands. The studio works across art, interiors and design with a vast range of high-profile clients, galleries, and collaborators.

Job Smeets is internationally recognized as pioneers of contemporary conceptual and sculptural design. Simone Micheli

Simone Micheli founded the Architecture Studio in 1990 and in 2003 he created the architecture company Simone Micheli Architectural Hero together with Roberta Colla. The society is based in Florence, Milan, Puntaldìa, Dubai, Rabat and Busan. His professional activity ranges from master plans and architecture to interior, from design to visual, through graphics, communication and event organization. His creations, always sustainable and environmentally conscious, are characterized by a strong identity and uniqueness. Many are his creations for public administrations and important private clients connected to the community and to the residential world. He is the curator of thematic exhibitions – contract, but not only – at the main international architecture, design and hospitality fairs. Donald MacDonald

Donald MacDonald, owner and Principal of Donald MacDonald Architects, LLP is an award-winning architect with over 40 years of architecture experience. Donald has expertise in many facets of bridge design, including conceptual planning, architectural enhancements, transportation operations, public participation, landscaping, and environmental studies. He has a record of successful collaboration with bridge engineers and other technical professionals on complex, signature bridges, such as the design-build of the Abraham Lincoln Bridge between Louisville, Kentucky and Jeffersonville, Indiana, done with IBT; the $750 million Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge in Charleston, SC; the 524-meter Tilikum Crossing Bridge in Portland, OR, where he led a team of ten assisting in the structure’s construction; and the $6.2 billion San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge project. MacDonald graduated from Columbia University, and during his career, has won just under 200 international, national, and regional awards for architectural design. He lectures on architectural design worldwide and holds an AIA Fellowship in design. Jacques Ferrier

Jacques Ferrier is an architect and urban planner. He studied architecture at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture in Paris-Belleville and civil engineering at École Centrale in Paris. In 1993, he created his own practice in Paris and has worked in France and internationally since then. His work follows a clear philosophy and aims to create an architecture and an urban environment for a creative and sustainable society.
His portfolio includes cultural and leisure facilities (amongst others the French Pavilion for the Shanghai World Expo 2010 and the Water Park Aqualagon near Paris), showcase buildings (such as the Headquarters for Champagne Piper & Charles Heidsieck in Reims, the Headquarters of Hachette Livre in Paris and the Airbus Delivery Center in Toulouse), public buildings (notably the Collège de France in Paris, the Métropole Rouen Normandie headquarters and the International French School of Beijing). Pauline Marchetti and Jacques Ferrier have been collaborating since 2008. Together, with the philosopher Philippe Simay, they created in 2010 Sensual City Studio, a research laboratory devoted to a forward-looking, humanistic and sensitive approach to the city and to architecture. Since then, they have developed a significant portfolio, with public and private projects, that combine research and architecture.
Jacques Ferrier is qualified to teach in architectural schools in France. He has published a large number of books and articles on his ongoing architectural research. His work has been the subject of many publications, especially The Architecture of Jacques Ferrier (edited by Thames & Hudson London in 2016). His work has been showcased in several monographic exhibitions : ‘Entre-Deux’ at the The Design Center of the University of Quebec in Montreal, ‘Impressionismus at the Architektur Galerie Berlin, ‘Non oppressive Design’ at the DOKK1 in Aarhus and ‘A vision for the Sensual City’ in Manila, Singapore, Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur. Brinda Somaya

Brinda Somaya is an architect and urban conservationist. Upon completion of her Bachelor of Architecture from Mumbai University and Master of Arts from Smith College in Northampton, MA, USA, she started her firm Somaya and Kalappa Consultants (SNK) in 1978 in Mumbai, India. In May 2012 she was conferred an Honorary Doctorate from her alma mater, Smith College. In 2014 she was awarded the Indian Institute of Architects – Baburao Mhatre Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement. From 2016-2021 she was the Chairperson of the Board of Governors, School of Planning and Architecture, Vijayawada, an Institute of National Importance. In 2017 she joined the
Board of the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction, Zurich, Switzerland and was also elected as the A.D. White Professor-at-Large by Cornell University, U.S.A.
Over four decades she has merged architecture, conservation and social equity in projects ranging from institutional campuses, rehabilitation of an earthquake-torn village to restoration of an 18th century Cathedral, showing that progress and history need not be at odds. Her belief that ‘The Architect’s role is that of guardian – hers is the conscience of the built and un-built environment’, underlines her work that encompasses large corporate, industrial and institutional campuses and extends to public spaces, some of which she has rebuilt, and others reinvented as pavements, parks and plazas.
Some of SNK’s award-winning campuses include Tata Consultancy Services, Banyan Park, Mumbai;
Nalanda International School, Vadodara; and Zensar Technologies, Pune. Brinda Somaya was on the IAWA board of Advisors (International Archives of Women in Architecture), U.S.A. She has delivered analytical and critical talks as well as presented papers in India and abroad on her work. Rafiq Azam

Professor Rafiq Azam is an internationally acclaimed architect from Bangladesh who has been practicing and developing his remarkable style of green architecture for the last 30 years. His architecture is a harmonious fusion of tradition, nature, and mysticism, including tiny elements of nature to adorn his buildings with poetic beauty. A “House” to him is not just an abode for humans, but a nest for butterflies and birds as well. Rafiq’s mastery of light, shadow, water, and air is influenced by such mysticisms as cited by Lalon and Tagore. His green architecture is not a mere mechanism of energy saving – rather it is an inspiring process of energy gaining.

Rafiq Azam was born on December 29, 1963, in Dhaka, Bangladesh and lived with his family in Lalbagh for most of his youth. In 1986, he finished designing the Azam Residence, a single-family residence which he held dear to his heart as it was made to house his own family following the death of his father. The residence finished construction in 1988. Rafiq Azam then went on to graduate from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 1989 and started his architectural practice, “SHATOTTO architecture for green living”, in May 1995.

In 2004, Rafiq Azam participated in the “Glenn Murcutt Master Class”, and in 2008 was selected as one of the ten emerging designers of the world by “Urban Land” in the USA.

As a visiting faculty, Rafiq taught at notable institutions such as the National University of Singapore, NED Karachi, Jadavpur University India, BRAC University, University of Asia Pacific, North South University Dhaka, and Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology, Dhaka, among others.

Some of his major projects include the SA Residence, a single family residence constructed in 2010; The SP Setia Headquarters, an international project completed in Malaysia in 2014; The Mayor Mohammad Hanif Jame Mosque, a contemporary mosque built adjacent to the Azimpur Graveyard in Old Dhaka in 2018; And Rasulbagh Children’s Park, a revitalization project of an old misused park completed in 2021 as part of the Jol Shobuje Dhaka initiative. ^[2]

Rafiq Azam has also acquired many awards and achievements. He is the proud holder of The Berger Excellence Award, the AR Emerging Architecture Award, and the IAB Award. He is also a four-times winner of the Cityscape Global Award, five-times winner of the World Architectural Community Award, and six-times winner of the South Asian Architecture Award.

Rafiq Azam qualified as a finalist for the Aga Khan Award in 2004 and 2007, won the Leading European Award in 2015, the ARCASIA Gold Medal and the World Architecture Festival (WAF) Award in 2017, won first place in the Eurasian Prize 2020, and received an Honorable Mention in the DNA Paris Design Awards in 2021.

Most recently, Rafiq Azam has been awarded with High Commendations in the UIA 2030 award in June 2022 and has been selected as the recipient for the Commonwealth Association of Architects’ Robert Matthew Life Time Achievement award in July 2022.

He has also served as an international juror on multiple architectural platforms and has attracted media attention from all over the world.

Jeremy Smith

Dr Jeremy Smith, Design Director Irving Smith Architects, Adjunct Associate Professor University of Auckland. Irving Smith Architects is a research-based design practice working in sensitive environments throughout New Zealand and abroad. In his role as Design Director, Jeremy has led a range of design innovations, including winning

Bernard Khoury

Bernard Khoury was born in Beirut in 1968. He studied architecture at the Rhode Island school of Design (BFA 1990 / B.Arch. 1991) and received a Masters in Architectural Studies from Harvard University (M.Arch. 1993). In 2001, he was awarded, by the municipality of Rome, the honorable mention of the Borromini Prize given to architects under forty years of age. In 2004, he was awarded the Architecture + Award. He is the co-founder of the Arab Center for Architecture. He was a visiting professor in several design and architecture schools, including the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, L’Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris. Astrid Klein

Astrid Klein was born in Italy, attended the European School, and went to the Beaux-Arts and Arts Décoratifs in France. After graduating from the Royal College of Art in London, she moved to Japan, where she has lived and worked since 1988.

Astrid was drawn to Japan by the simplicity of Japanese design, its attention to detail and freedom from traditional constraints. In Tokyo she began working for Toyo Ito and in 1991 she co-founded Klein Dytham architecture with Mark Dytham.

Today, Klein Dytham architecture (KDa) is a multi-disciplinary design practice known for architecture, interiors, public spaces and installations. Their Daikanyama T-SITE project in central Tokyo redefined bookstores globally. Totan Kuzembaev

Totan Kuzembaev was born in the Chimkent region of Kazakhstan. He received his architectural education in Moscow. Colin Seah

Architecturally trained in the US and licensed in Singapore, Colin Seah honed his sensibilities working for the likes of Rem Koolhaas and Daniel Libeskind. He also spent 4 years at the National University of Singapore’s Department of Architecture researching design pedagogy and serving as design critic.

As MOD’s Founder and Director of Design, Colin has been named Designer of the Year by International Design Awards USA 2010, and is a two-time recipient of Singapore’s highest design accolade, the President’s Design Award. He is also a three-time Grand Prize Winner of the Gold Key Award, the highest international hospitality accolade, named Hong Kong Perspective’s ’40 under 40 architects’ and Marcus Corporation Foundation Prize 2007 ’emerging architect with potential for greatness’ and recognized as “Rising Star in Architecture” by Monocle. Colin Seah has been a juror for the Inaugural Dezeen Awards, a Global Advisor for leading surfaces manufacturer Cosentino and invited by the Singapore Tourism Board to redefine Singapore as a destination for 2020 and beyond.

In 2002 she was decorated Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de la République Française. In 2006 Awards for Excellence Europe” ULI (Urban Land Institute), first prize awarded to New Trade Fair Rho-Pero in Milan. In 2012 Wallpaper* Design Awards 2012, New Rome-Eur Congress Centre awarded Best Building Site. In 2013 she was decorated Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres de la RépubliqueFrançaise. The same year the Idea-Tops Awards, Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport-T3, awarded Best Transportation Space in Shenzhen, China.

From 2014 to 2015 he was the author of the Design column in the Italian newspaper “La Repubblica”. From January 1st, 2020, Doriana Fuksas was awarded the title of Chevalier de l’Ordre de la Légion d’Honneur Française.

Todd Saunders (1969) is one of the most important contemporary Canadian architects working internationally. His architecture, simple yet powerful, incorporates elements of his country’s architectural identity – including the use of wood and carefully picked Modernist influences – bringing it at the same time into the 21st century with excellent execution, carefully chosen materials and a hands-on approach.

Saunders, who has lived and worked in Bergen, Norway for the past 25 years, has successfully executed work in both Canada, Norway, USA, Sweden, and Finland, creating architecture with a strong sense of northern identity, an individual approach that is informed by the strength of natural landscape.

Saunders studied at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax and McGill University in Montreal. In 2016 Saunders was given an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. He continues to combine teaching with practice. He has lectured in over 20 countries. He has been a visiting professor at Cornell University in New York. He will be a guest professor at Yale University during the fall of 2021.

Saunders’ projects have been presented in magazines and newspapers in over 40 countries, and are featured in over 100 books from 15 different countries.

In December 2012, the Swiss Publishing House Birkhäuser published a book on the architecture of Todd Saunders, written by Jonathan Bell and Ellie Stathaki, the editors of Wallpaper Magazine in London.

In the fall of 2021, the British publisher Thames & Hudson is publishing a new book on selected residential projects by Todd Saunders, written by Dominic Bradbury, freelance writer for The Financial Times, The Times and several other magazines and newspapers internationally .

In 2020 Todd Saunders was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Saunders was ranked one of Norway’s 10 best architects by the magazine Bo Bedre in 2009, and was placed number 52 among the 100 best architects in the world by the German magazine BauNetz in 2012. Saunders was also ranked among the five top architects in the world under 50 by the Huffington Post in 2011.

His most renowned project, The Fogo Island Inn on Fogo Island, Canada, har won several awards. In 2020, the Fogo Island Inn’s dining hall, The Fogo Island Shed, won both the World Architecture News Award and the Gray Award.

Worth mentioning is the Travel + Leisure Global Vision Award – Culture in 2013, Architizer A+ Awards Jury Winner in 2016, and being ranked the #1 hotel in Canada and #3 hotel in the world 2020 by Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards.

In 2011, the project Fogo Island Studios in Canada won the HISE Award for Sustainable Excellence as well as the AZ Award for Best Commercial Project, and the Solberg Tower and Park was awarded the Arnstein Arneberg Award for Outstanding Architecture.

In October 2006, the Norwegian Association of Architects nominated the Aurland Lookout for the Mies van der Rohe Prize; The European Union prize for contemporary architecture. In 2006, this project won the Norwegian Construction Prize, was given an honourable mention at the AR Awards for Emerging Architects in London, and was nominated for Wallpaper magazine’s ʻBest Public Projectʼ in 2007.

In the fall of 2005 Saunders was a part of an exhibition entitled 20 under 40: Young Norwegian Architecture hosted by the Norwegian Architecture Association.

Saunders is now focusing on creating community based architecture and art together with philanthropist in order to instigate change. The studio is in the process of completing a visitor centre in Katahdin National park together with The Elliotsville Foundation. Previous projects with philanthropists have included all the Fogo Island project with the Shorefast Foundation and the Illusuak Cultural Centre in Labrador with the Nunatsiavut. What matters for Saunders now is to create architecture and art that gives back to communities.

Erick van Egeraat
During his over 40 years of successful practice, Erick van Egeraat (Amsterdam, 1956) has built a highly diverse portfolio containing ambitious and high-profile projects in The Netherlands, Europe, and the Russian Federation. He has led the realization of over 166 projects in more than 10 countries ranging from buildings for public and commercial use to luxury and social housing projects, projects for mixed-use and master plans for cities, and even entire regions. Each of these projects represents his very personal and expressive vision on architecture and urban development. Both Erick van Egeraat and his work have been the recipients of numerous international awards and citations such as the RIBA Award 2007 for the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art and the ‘Best Animated Architecture’ award at the 2014 Media Architecture Biennale for the Waste to Energy Plant in Roskilde, Denmark.

Erick van Egeraat graduated from Delft University of Technology, Department of Architecture, with honourable mention in 1984 and was the co-founder of Mecanoo – the renowned avant-garde architects. In 1995 he established (EEA) Erick van Egeraat associated architects with offices in Rotterdam, Moscow, Budapest, London, and Prague. In order to better meet the demands of a portfolio as diverse as his, Erick van Egeraat successfully restructured his company in 2009 into what is now (design) Erick van Egeraat.

Asif Khan MBE

Asif Khan founded his architecture office in 2007 to design buildings that support new ways of thinking about the world and ourselves. He works internationally on a wide range of projects from cultural buildings and landscapes to experimental structures and has taught at the Royal College of Art and Musashino Art University.

Born in London to parents from Tanzanian and Pakistani backgrounds, he studied at the Architectural Association and Bartlett School of Architecture. His current portfolio of projects includes the New Museum of London, which is the largest cultural project in Europe, the carbon-fibre Entry Portals at Dubai Expo 2020, and over 6km of Expo 2020 Public Realm design. Also currently under construction are a Museum of Manuscripts in Sharjah and the Tselinny Centre of Contemporary Culture in Almaty which will open in 2022. Well known works include the UK Pavilion at Astana Expo in 2017 in collaboration with Musician Brian Eno and the Hyundai Pavilion at PyeongChang Winter Olympics in 2018.

A finalist in the competition for the Helsinki Guggenheim Art Museum, Asif was awarded Architect of the Year in 2018 by the German Design Council and received an MBE for services to Architecture in 2017. Asif is currently Deputy Chairman of the board of the Design Museum in London.

Since 2017, Tetsuya became jury member for A’ Design Awards, K-Design awards, Asia Design Prize, UNI’s Di-Generic cities Tokyo, C-IDEA Design Award, Azerbaijan Design Award, Sky Design Awards, and the World Architecture Festival.

Todd Saunders
